Which two gases are considered extremely bad to inhale from a fire?

Oxygen and Nitrogen

Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Cyanide

In a fire, the gases produced by combustion become the main inhalation hazard, and two stand out as especially deadly: carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it binds to hemoglobin with a much higher affinity than oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin. This greatly reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and shifts the oxygen–hemoglobin balance in a way that makes tissues starve for oxygen even if some air is being breathed. Hydrogen cyanide is lethal because it blocks a crucial step in cellular respiration—cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria—so cells can’t use the oxygen they take in. That means energy production grinds to a halt, and tissues fail rapidly, which is why exposure can be fatal very quickly, especially in enclosed spaces where these gases accumulate.

The other gases listed either aren’t as toxic in typical fire scenarios or don’t cause the same rapid, life-threatening disruption. Oxygen is essential for life, nitrogen is largely inert, methane is not highly toxic, ammonia is irritant but not as instantly deadly in the general fire context, and helium or neon are inert gases that mainly pose asphyxiation risks only when they displace oxygen in large, confined spaces.
